The digital projector market in India saw a great year of performance in 2007 and
grew by 23% in 2007 over 2006. The market is growing with the IT boom, and
projectors are fast becoming a necessary part of the IT infrastructure for the
companies. The growth has been fuelled especially by the IT and the ITeS segment,
whose training requirements have been increasing at a phenomenal pace. The year
2006 was marked by falling prices and revenues taking acomparative hit. The players
in the market are pulling up sales with channel driven programs and pushing down
prices.
In the technology split, LCD projectors market shipments accounted for 55% of the
total shipments, while DLP projectors accounted for 44% of the total shipments. This
is a shift in favour of the LCD technology as compared to the last year. LcoS which
was reintroduced into the market in 2006, has also shown a positive growth.
In terms of brightness levels, 38% of the market share was captured by projectors
with the brightness range of 1501-2000 lumens. This was followed by brightness
range of 2001-2500 lumens with 28%. This marks a shift towards the higher
brightness level as compared to last year.
Similar to 2006, the year 2007 also saw a preference for light weight and portable
projectors, with 61% of the total sales coming from the projectors within the weight
range of 2-3 kg. |
| Vendor Performance |
The top four places in the overall market were occupied by NEC, Epson, Sony and
Sharp, with 11.1%, 11.0%, 10.2% and 9.8% market shares respectively. There has
been a considerable shift in these positions from 2006, with Sharp losing its number
one position, NEC becoming the market leader, Epson retaining the second position
and Sharp being edged out by Sony.
